Farm to School Internships

Get involved with the Chequamegon Bay
Farm to School Program!

Farm to School in the Chequamegon Bay is powered by people, such as: 
  • Farmers who provide students a tour of their operation and show them where their food comes from 
  • Master Gardeners who lend their expertise to the school gardens
  • College students interested in building their resumes while doing meaningful work in their communities
  • And people of all ages who promote local and healthy eating in our region!

Farm to School Internship Position Descriptions


Nutrition Education Assistant

Location: Bayfield, Washburn, and/or Ashland School Districts (with some work done from home)

Description of Project: One of the goals of the Chequamegon Bay Farm to School Program is to plan and facilitate nutrition education programming in elementary classrooms and school gardens.  

Outline of Volunteer’s Responsibilities:
We are looking for a volunteer to assist with Farm to School nutrition education programming.  Duties could include, but are not limited to:
  • Researching lesson plans and brainstorming activity ideas
  • Assist teachers and/or the AmeriCorps Nutrition Education Member in classrooms
  • Facilitating hands-on garden activities such as seed starting, transplanting, etc.
  • Maintaining lesson records and evaluations

Support:
The volunteer will work closely with the AmeriCorps Nutrition Education Member at one or all school districts to support current nutrition education programming.  The volunteer will also meet monthly with the Chequamegon Bay Farm to School team to help plan activities that are coordinated between school districts.

Time Commitment:
Fall Term 2016 or Winter Term 2017
Hours will be arranged based on applicant’s availability and/or desired credits, but will be between 40 - 90 total hours.

Qualifications Needed: 
  • Enthusiasm for local, seasonal, traditional, and healthy eating
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Teaching or coaching experience preferred
  • Experience with youth preferred

Farm to School Intern

Location: Bayfield, Washburn, and/or Ashland School Districts, with some work done from home (location can be based on preference)

Description of Project: 
The Chequamegon Bay Farm to School Program aims to increase access to fresh healthy foods and foster an awareness of food choices.  A specific goal of the Chequamegon Bay Farm to School Program is to plan and facilitate nutrition education programming in elementary classrooms and school gardens.  The Farm to School Intern would work closely with the AmeriCorps Nutrition Educator in this task.

 Outline of Intern’s Responsibilities:
  • We are looking for someone to assist with Farm to School nutrition education programming.  Duties could include, but are not limited to
  • Researching lesson plans and brainstorming garden-based activity ideas
  • Assisting the AmeriCorps Nutrition Educator in classrooms and the garden 
  • Facilitating hands-on garden activities such as seed starting, transplanting, etc.
  • Maintaining the garden and caring for garden plants
  • Maintaining lesson records and evaluations

Support:
The intern will work closely with the AmeriCorps Nutrition Educator at one or all school districts to support current nutrition education programming.  The intern will also communicate regularly with the AmeriCorps Community Outreach Coordinator and the Farm to School Site Supervisor at the School District(s) she/he is serving.

Time Commitment:
May Term 2016 or Summer Session 2016
Hours will be arranged based on applicant’s availability and/or desired credits, but will be between 40 - 90 total hours.

Qualifications Needed:
  • Enthusiasm for local, seasonal, traditional, and healthy eating
  • Enthusiasm for gardening and hands-on learning
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Teaching or coaching experience preferred
  • Experience with youth preferred

Benefits:
  • Northland College internship credit (if desired)
  • Preference for the position opening in August 2014 of the Farm to School AmeriCorps Nutrition Educator at the School District of Bayfield 
  • Experience in education and gardening
  • Experience working with youth
